Chevrolet Colorado Bass Upgrade and Underbody Lighting

A while back, the owner of this Chevrolet Colorado stopped by to talk about upgrading the audio and lighting in his truck. After looking at the truck, we devised a plan for his Colorado bass upgrade and underbody lighting.

Underbody Lighting

The rock lights are bright enough to be seen in full light.

The client can use a smartphone app to choose from many lighting colors.

The client wanted to add a bit of underbody lighting to make his Colorado stand out at night. Our discussion with him didn’t sound like he needed a full underbody LED kit, so we recommended some rock lights in each fender well. The rock lights are a durable, simple way of adding lighting on the outside of a vehicle. We used an RGB LED lighting kit so the client could choose any desired color.

Colorado Bass Upgrade

The enclosure was built so the subwoofers would fire downward in the truck.

We carpeted the enclosure in black trunkliner carpet.

We used every bit of space under the seat to fit the two subwoofers.

The JL Audio JD amplifier fit behind the rear seat.

We added a remote level control knob to the center console for bass adjustment.

When we initially looked at the Colorado with the client, we saw a very small amount of space available for building a subwoofer enclosure. Under the rear seat had just a little bit of available room for bass. Because we knew we would be dealing with such small amounts of airspace, we quoted the client for two JL Audio 10tw1 subwoofers. The 10tw1 subwoofers work in a tiny amount of airspace and have impressive output.
The enclosure for the Colorado took a bit of calculating to fit under the seat and have enough airspace for the two 10″ subwoofers. After cutting a few sample profiles, we found the right angles for the enclosure that would allow proper fitment and room for the subwoofers. We constructed the enclosure out of 3/4″ MDF. Once assembled we then rounded all the corners on our router tables and then added seam lines so the carpet joints would be clean. The enclosure was carpeted with automotive-grade black carpet, and then we installed the subwoofers and enclosure into the truck.
Powering the enclosure was a JL Audio JD500/1 amplifier. The JL Audio JD amplifiers are a great value. We added a remote level control knob in the center console, so the client could adjust the level of bass output to his liking.

Impressive Bass In A Very Small Space

Once the equipment was installed and the wiring was neatly routed it was time to turn it on and see how it sounded. This is one of our favorite parts of the job! We were blown away by the amount of bass that the Colorado had. The output from the JL Audio 10tw1’s sounded louder than we had expected from such a small enclosure. The client loved it too!
