Sportsman Masters 227 JL Audio Marine Audio Upgrade

If you have done any browsing on our Pinnacle Autosound website, you will see we work on quite a few Sportsman boats. Thanks to the local dealer, McDuffie Marine, our area has access to a great line of boats. Sportsman’s partnership with JL Audio makes using JL Audio marine audio products for Sportsman upgrades a no-brainer. When this client purchased his Sportsman Masters 227 it had the basic Sportsman audio package consisting of a JL Audio Media Master 50 radio and some JL Audio M3 coaxial speakers. He wanted more output than the basic package could provide, so he gave us a call.

JL Audio M6-880 Speaker Upgrade

The speaker arrangement made sure everyone in the boat had great sound.

One pair of speakers were mounted in the front of the boat.

We replace the M3 speakers with the M6-880’s.

The white trim rings cleaned up the back of the installation.

We used our laser cutter to create these acrylic trim rings.

One of our favorite marine audio speakers is the JL Audio M6-880. The M6-880 offers superb power handling, unprecedented output, and surprising bass response. When clients ask about a great speaker, they are on the top of our list to recommend. That was the case with this client. Using the M6-880 speakers would not only give the client plenty of volume, but their powerful bass output would save the client from having to buy a dedicated subwoofer.
We planned to use two pairs of the M6-880 speakers. We would place one pair in the bow, and one at the stern, replacing the existing speakers. The rear speakers came with a molded plastic trim bucket that covered their magnet assembly. These were placed on them by the Sportsman factory. We removed those to fit the new M6-880 speakers. To clean up the opening we enlarged, we used our laser to cut a white acrylic trim ring. This ring was mounted to the back side of the speaker location to give the installation a clean, finished look.

Marine Audio Amplifier

The clean power provided by the JL Audio amplifier makes it one of our favorites.

We were able to retain the JL Audio MM50 radio.

We have found from our experiences with the M6-880 speakers that they love lots of clean power. To give them what they love, our go-to amplifier when using two pairs of these speakers is the M800/8. We bridge the eight amplifier channels to four so that each speaker gets 200 watts of power. The result is an incredible audio experience!

Client Loved His Marine Audio Upgrades

After we finished the amplifier installation, we removed our protective floor coverings on the boat and cleaned up the remaining areas. We adjusted the settings on the amplifier to maximize the potential of the new speakers. It was another great-sounding boat!
