Jeep Wrangler Backup Camera and Radio

Jeeps are known for their capable off-road abilities. To help prepare them for off-road adventures, many Jeep owners have a spare tire on their tailgate. While this is great for a needed situation, it isn’t so great for the driver’s rearward vision. The owner of this Jeep had such an issue, so they came to us for a Jeep Wrangler backup camera and new radio.

The first step in this project was to upgrade the radio. The client chose the Stinger GX3800 radio. The Stinger radio offers several source options, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Most importantly for this client, it also has an input for a backup camera. We wired the reverse trigger wire on the radio to a wire in the Jeep that receives power when the vehicle is placed into reverse gear. This wire then tells the screen to change to the camera input, so using the backup camera is seamless.

Once the radio was installed, we moved on to the Jeep Wrangler backup camera installation. As we mentioned before, the spare tire on the back of some Jeeps can be an issue for rear visibility. The tire can also be a challenge for installing a backup camera. Luckily our camera vendor, Echomaster, offers a mount for Jeep tires. To install the mount and camera, we first removed the rear tire. Then we measured the distance from the mounting holes to the wheel openings to adjust the mount accurately. Before reinstalling the tire and mount, we ran the camera wiring neatly through the tailgate and up to the radio.
When we installed the spare tire back on the Jeep, we took the opportunity to rotate the wheel’s center cap so that the logo was oriented correctly. Our clients choose us for little details like this.

One More Safer Jeep On The Road

When the installation was complete, we let the client know the Jeep was ready to be picked up. We helped the client connect their phone and showed them how to operate their new radio.
